Jeremy Hunts visits Godalming College

Godalming College students had a rare opportunity to discuss hot political and economic questions with the current Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, just after his return from the Conservative Party Conference.  The Main Hall at Godalming was packed with students of Politics, Economics and other students who were interested in what he had to say.  In an hour-long session Jeremy took questions from the floor, not just about his current role as Chancellor but also covering topics that had been the subject of much debate in the press during the week.

“Jeremy Hunt’s visit was an invaluable opportunity for students to hear from a cabinet minister who has been on the frontline of UK Politics for 18 years. Our students grilled Jeremy on a range of topics, from fracking & HS2 to the state of Britain’s NHS, asking excellent probing questions. It was an enlightening and educational experience”, says Politics teacher Ed.

Here is what some of our students thought about the talk.

George (U6th): “I found the opportunity to listen to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to be incredibly interesting and insightful. He told us all about his journey into Politics and how much of a rollercoaster a political career can be which was very entertaining, especially the story about him falling over on stage.”

Rohan (U6th): “The Jeremy Hunt visit was truly captivating. I found his insights into saving the UK economy and his perspective on British Politics, including the Tories' chances in the 2025 election and the ideological shift within the Conservative Party, incredibly interesting. Witnessing how a high-ranking politician responds to public questions was also quite fascinating. It was beneficial as I could gain valuable knowledge from a politician who holds such high office in the UK.”

Suzanne (U6th): “No matter your political opinions, it’s not often that you get to meet the Chancellor of the Exchequer, so when I heard that Jeremy Hunt was visiting Godalming, I was very excited! I found the talk to be thought provoking, as he gave us advice on his take of the realities of being a politician, such as Politics not being a meritocracy. He also answered lots of challenging and direct questions on his past roles and the current government, which was fascinating to see firsthand and to analyse his responses. I am so grateful to the College for giving us this amazing opportunity!”

Charlotte (U6th): "Jeremy Hunt's visit to the College was insightful, from gaining knowledge of what a career in Politics can look like to his advice on how you can get there. He was an interesting speaker, and it was an incredible opportunity to be able to meet and question a current, senior government minister!"

Iona (L6th): "It was a great opportunity to be able to hear from our local MP and have the chance to ask question about the current government and key decisions that have been made recently."
