Godalming College has been a great experience for me, not only has it allowed me to sharpen my abilities in the subjects I have chosen but it has also provided me with the necessary tools to enhance my life skills to prepare me for my future. I currently study History and Philosophy A Levels, Music Technology BTEC plus the Music Practitioners qualification as an additional study. I got into music production around 4 years ago, having had piano lessons for 10 years I felt the next step was to compose my own music. The music industry is an increasingly competitive field and by deciding to study Music Technology I feel equipped to work within the industry after I leave. This course has given me a variety of skills ranging from recording techniques, sequencing, to mixing and mastering all of which will come in handy for a variety of
roles within the industry.

The live sound aspect of the course in the first year certainly helped prepare me for my hobby as a DJ as I am now in the process of setting up a mobile DJing company as well as sound and light hire. By understanding the fundamental skills needed to be a live sound engineer, checking levels and preventing distortion for example I’ve
been able to apply this knowledge when out gigging. Our Music and Sound for The Moving Image unit in the second year has helped me develop my interest composing music for the film industry. This unit has made me realise how important music is to help portray what is shown in a trailer. I thoroughly enjoyed having to write the music for the video game “Destiny”. In addition to this, as a class we have been working on an EP which consists of 15 minutes of music. We have spent a considerable amount of time learning how to mix and master to a professional standard.

This course has certainly equipped me with the skills to fulfil my ambition to become a music producer and professional DJ, the expertise and inspiration of both my teachers has helped me become a more knowledgeable student and my participation in the Music Practitioners has helped me improve as a musician overall. The facilities in the music department are high quality and they have allowed me to create music
to a near professional level.
