Discovering the natural world

Year two pupils from Busbridge Infants School had an opportunity learn to more about the world around them during a special morning of science activities organised by childcare students at Godalming College.

The sixth formers set up and ran four lively workshops that covered topics such as floating and sinking, the lifecycle of a flower, bug investigation and volcanic eruptions. Twenty six children took part in the hands-on activities, including making craft items to take back to school. The morning ended with parachute games in the early year’s outdoor classroom.

Speaking about the activities, Philippa Cahill, head of early years, says, “The students really enjoyed teaching the young pupils. It was great to see everyone so engrossed in practical science. The lessons, which link to the national curriculum, have proved so popular that other year twos who couldn’t attend the college’s workshops have also been following the same experiments with their class teacher.”

After completing the two-year national diploma in childcare and education at Godalming College, many students choose to follow a teacher training qualification at university.
