Level 3 Programme: A Level and BTEC Courses

BTEC National (level 3) Diploma
AS/A Level
This Music course introduces you to the disciplines involved in an academic and practical study of the subject.
AS Level Music
Students will perform a solo recital lasting 6 minutes in length. Responding to exam board briefs, students will also compose 2 pieces in styles of their choice lasting 4.5 minutes in total. Students will study set works of vocal, instrumental,  lm, world, pop and jazz music in preparation for a 2 hour listening and analysis exam at the end of the year.
A level Music
Students will perform a solo recital lasting 8 minutes in length. Responding to an exam board brief, students will also compose a piece in a style of their choice and complete a technical composition study. Like AS Music, students will study the same range of musical styles in preparation for a 2 hour listening and analysis exam at the end of the year.
We often have visits from professional performers and run trips
to concerts and workshops relating to the course. There are many performing opportunities throughout the year either as a soloist or
in our Concert Orchestra, Contemporary Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band or one of our many chamber ensembles. We provide private instrumental and singing tuition from visiting teachers. This busy and vibrant department welcomes all students with a passion for any kind of music.
Each year our students progress to study music at top universities or gain places at leading conservatoires such as RCM, RAM, Guildhall, Trinity and RWCMD.
Additional Entry Requirements
English and Mathematics GCSE at grade 4. Ability to play an instrument/ sing to at least grade 6 standard. Ability to pass grade 5 Music Theory.
60% coursework, externally assessed, 40% exam, externally assessed.
This two-year course focuses on developing your skills within television and  lm. You will be working on a number of different productions throughout the year and exploring behind the scenes in the television and  lm industries, understanding the different structures in detail. In addition you will take part in a number of industry based pitches and may have an opportunity to gain work experience in the  lm and TV industry.
Additional Entry Requirements
Grade 4/C in English or Media Studies, or a Pass at BTEC First Award.
There will be a combination of internally assessed practical projects and assignments, together with externally assessed examined units. Grades of Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* are awarded which are equivalent to A levels for the purpose of university entrance.
