George Norman (Design: 3D A Level)

Case Study

This particular 3D Design course is very different to other ones I was looking at. It included more design orientated tasks, which was just up my street for my future education. These tasks included sketching as well as CAD work, but with the CAD work, I had no previous experience. Both my teachers helped me using this new CAD software and by the end of even the first lesson, I already had a grasp on how to use them, which was key as it was used throughout the course. Due to my past studies of Art and my love for drawing, I was already competent in sketching, however, when we came to sketches I tried to push myself and provide more detailed or multiple sketches. My teachers emphasised that I needed to explore designs so, therefore, creating more than one design helped a lot in the long run. I was also told to use multiple ways of designing my models, such as sketches, model making, the use of the laser cutter and 3D printer, which the department provided for me and helped me use. Overall the department has helped me reach the level that I would like to be at, these were backed by the resources they provided and extra teaching they did for me.
