Luke S (Film Studies A Level)

I initially chose to study film as I have long aspired to work within the film industry and it was not an option available to me at GCSE level. So, it was the most suitable option to further my knowledge of the industry and develop my understanding of film analysis.

Over the two-year period, the Film Studies A Level reflects on eleven select films, all suited to cover individual aspects of film form, attitudes, audience interpretation and relevance to social or economic contexts across different time periods. It presses students to compare the evolution of film which also gets you to think critically about movies in general. The Film Studies A Level is perfect for integrating into a university degree or a studio apprenticeship.

During the first year, there is an opportunity to do practical work to complement the writing-based work. The experience of making a short film or writing a screenplay contributes to your final grade. Students who create a short film are given access to school equipment and a tutorial by the film department on the workings and how they can use it effectively to shoot. It’s a great opportunity for students to develop their capability and many innovative short films come out of this.

The teachers in the film department ensure most lessons are interactive, inviting student participation and group activities that help students express their ideas and work collaboratively on developing points and plans for the films we study. They also provide workshop opportunities should students struggle with understanding the content. The teachers are excellent at working through the films in simple yet effective ways, enabling you to focus on the engaging and participatory elements of film.

If film is a passion of yours then this is a course that will allow you to flourish in terms of exam ability, critical thinking skills and expressing your ideas around the subject fluently.

The Film Studies A Level has expanded my horizons of understanding movies, causing me to choose the subject at university level. Studying film at Godalming is a great foundation for not only trying to go into film, but to give you great team working skills and writing techniques all of which benefit you in other subjects, if you go on to work or on to a degree.
