Macy F (Design: Graphic Design and Communication A Level)

When choosing my A levels, I was unsure of what degree/career I wanted to pursue, and so I simply picked subjects that I enjoyed the most, which is certainly the best way of going about it. I ended up choosing Graphic Design, History: Democracy & Dictators, and Psychology. These may not have been an obvious combination, but I've enjoyed having a range of subjects to keep my studies varied.

The wonderful thing about Graphic Design is that everyone takes their project in a different direction. As students, we're really encouraged to think outside the box and create ambitious final installations. Because of this, I've enjoyed making my own ideas into a developed brand, and it’s been great fun to watch my friends’ projects take shape. Another enjoyable aspect of Graphic Design has been creating a project based on my own interests. For example, in my Component 1 project, I created a series of designs and outcomes for a live music venue, inspired by my love for live gigs. Also, graphic design uses such a wide range of techniques, and I found myself constantly learning new things. There's always something new to test out, whether it's a printing technique, a new fabric, laser-cutting, heat-pressing or collage.

I've had an amazing amount of support while studying Graphic Design at Godalming College. Everyone gets a weekly one-to-one with their teachers, and this has ensured that I always know what I'm working towards next.

After Godalming College, I will be doing a History degree at UCL (University College London), which I am super excited about. Perhaps my love for graphics will draw me back to it at a later time!
