Godalming students enjoyed ‘Brain Day’

Neuroscientist and Lecturer Dr Guy Sutton visited our Biology and Psychology students for a couple of Brain Days.

First up where the Biology students, who experienced a passionate and energetic talk about Neuroanatomy, brain disorders, and the future of Neuroscience. It was exciting and inspiring to hear more about the current research that is done in this field. Dr Guy Sutton explained how artificial limbs can ‘feel’ and are controlled by the mind of a patient or how brain implants can enable people with ‘Locked-In’ syndrome to think words and have them appear on a screen.

“The students really enjoyed Brain Day and had lots of questions. It was a really inspiring talk for all of us and really showed us what amazing changes they can still expect in their lifetime. Mind controlled mobile phones are not as far as away as you might think.” Says Head of Biology Alex Chappelow.

In the late afternoon of Day 1, Dr Guy Sutton expanded his talks to other interested Godalming College students and students from Broadwater, Glebelands, Woolmer Hill and Rodborough School. The focus of this talk was of course the brain and it’s amazing properties, with a big focus on where the field of Neuroscience is heading to in the future.

During his second Day at Godalming College Dr Guy Sutton showed the Psychology students different brain conditions and talked about brain development. Students got to compare the brain size of different animals and even hold a real sheep’s brain in their hands.
