Eleanor Scott (Textiles A Level)

Case Study

I’m Eleanor and at Godalming College I chose to study Textiles, Art and History of Art. I really enjoyed all of these subjects especially Textiles as can be incorporated into any form of art with all its different techniques, materials and possible outcomes. I have always been interested in textiles from making little sewn animals with my dad, a cardigan out of odd socks to a range of masks and large scale soft sculptures for my final projects. Textile pieces can be decorative, worn and have a deeper meaning, we have explored all of these approaches at Godalming. I have learnt so many new skills on this course, such as felting, experimental sketchbook work, weaving, knitting, screen printing, indigo and rust dyeing but my favourite is freehand machine embroidery which I have used in so many of my works from writing text to creating fully stitched faces. This course is so amazing, working in the textile rooms with the other students is inspiring, the teachers are so knowledgeable and supportive with your ideas no matter how crazy they are. Textiles will always be a huge part of my life and I am so grateful for everything that I have learnt over the last two years.
