My favourite thing about studying English Literature is the teachers. Lessons are more like discussions, led by people who, rather than simply telling you an answer, help guide you to form your own opinions and feel confident in your skills as a reader. You are pushed to defend your views, while also keeping an open mind thinking critically about a range of opposing arguments. The ability to embody and unpick different perspectives is one of the most important elements of studying English and it is something that the department at Godalming really encourages through engaging teaching and varied lesson structures.
Throughout my time at Godalming, I have felt supported by my teachers, and also by a wide community of peers, classmates and friends who have helped me to improve both academically and more widely as a person. Godalming is a large college and it is impossible to get to know everyone, however my favourite part has definitely been the connections that I have made while I was here.
The trip to Paris was definitely a highlight for me. The trip’s interdisciplinary approach to learning blended together so many different elements of history such as art, sociology, theology, and politics, which I felt, combined with the complete cultural immersion, helped give me a fresh perspective on the events I was studying. I also really appreciated being able to connect with others studying history courses outside of mine which helped deepen my understanding of the field as a whole.
