Learning on Location: Travel & Tourism Students Explore Malta and Gozo

At the end of January, our Travel and Tourism students travelled to Malta, a destination widely recognised for its sustainable tourism practices as well as its rich historic and natural attractions. The country is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Valletta and the Megalithic Temples, which provide valuable insight into ancient civilisations and Baroque architecture. In 2024, Malta recorded a milestone year for tourism, welcoming over 3.5 million visitors, with further growth expected in the coming years, so it was an ideal place to visit for our curious explorers.

Thanks to upper sixth student, Kirsty, who shared the following trip report, and you can watch the video for all the highlights rolled into one!

For our year two Travel and Tourism trip we visited Malta and the island of Gozo. Whilst on the trip we visited and participated in a range of fun and cultural activities which will help us with our coursework in the future.

During the trip, we did a farm to table cooking class which included a tour of the farm and a cookery lesson making ravioli, vegetable soup and a Maltese bread pudding. This was super sustainable and it was interesting to make food from local produce.

We then visited the island of Gozo, where we saw historical sights, learning the history of the island. In Gozo, we also saw many churches and the Citadella, and had extra time to explore ourselves.

Finally, on our last day, we participated in a tile painting workshop which was a really lovely and relaxing way to end the trip, before heading to Malta's capital, Valletta. In Valletta we visited sight-seeing spots and learnt some history surrounding World War Two, which was super insightful. We then had some free time before going to a 5D show which gave us an overview of major historical events.

The trip was really enjoyable and gave me lots of opportunities to engage in culture experiences and learn more, which will be beneficial for my coursework.
