Supporting students to fulfil their potential and succeed beyond College is a big part of what we do at Godalming College. Part of this is the annual Medical Interview Day, which is organised for students wanting to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science/Medicine.
The day started just as they could expect, by signing in at Reception in their interview outfits and being greeted and briefed by a member of staff. The first assessment was a round of formal interviews with medical professionals. Next on the agenda was a round of mini-interviews, during which U6 Drama students and some members of staff tested the student’s ability to think creatively, be empathetic, stay calm in testing situations and face challenging ethical dilemmas.
After lunch the students enjoyed a talk by Dr Mark Ashcroft, a retired local GP who talked about his life as a GP, followed by an interesting talk by two former Godalming College students who are now studying Medicine at Keele and Southampton.
To make sure the students could improve further on their experience, they received some feedback on their performance at the end of the day. It was a thoroughly successful day, and we wish our students all the best with their applications to Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, knowing that if they are called for interview they will be fully prepared.
The Medicine Interview Day is part of the Aspire Programme, providing additional support for students who are making applications to highly competitive courses at university or for highly competitive universities such as Oxford or Cambridge. It provides stretch and challenge opportunities such as inclusion in National Competitions, trips to universities or visiting speakers, one-to-one guidance and mentoring, EPQ and specialist preparation for skills tests and interviews. There are specialised pathways for students whose ambition is to have a career in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Natural Sciences, Maths, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science, Law, English, Languages, Architecture and the Arts.
