Godalming College Students Showcase Research at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition

Godalming College students were well represented at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in 2026. On Wednesday 1 July, a group of Upper Sixth Biology students presented in the Young Researcher's Zone, as the culmination of a year-long research project led by our own Dr Jackie Glen and in partnership with the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Six students were able to explain to members of the public, as well as Fellows of the Royal Society, how they had been capturing and identifying mosquito species in order to track invasive species and the possible spread of infectious diseases.
 
This was an incredible opportunity for our students to meet some of the most prominent figures in the world of Science. The Fellows were impressed with their knowledge and skills, as well as their enthusiasm for explaining their findings. 

Upper Sixth student, Nysia said: "As someone interested in pursuing a career in research, this project has been an invaluable opportunity to develop first-hand a greater understanding of how research actually works. 
 
I feel more confident going into my university course already having some experience with both researching and molecular techniques. The event at the Royal Society was an amazing opportunity to talk to fellows from various universities and fields who were all very impressed by our project (even the physicists!) and reaffirmed the importance of research to both expand scientific knowledge and benefit wider society."
 
In addition, a group of Lower Sixth students visited the exhibition in order to chat to researchers from all fields of Science, from Robotics to Microbiology, Astronomy to Zoology.  Particular highlights included exhibits on using Nanotechnology in medicine, and the use of virtual reality in paleontology.
