Lois Boyle (English Language and Linguistics)

I chose to do English Language and Linguistics here at Godalming College as I really enjoyed studying English at secondary school. I enjoy the variety of topics covered, ranging from studying the language used in the media to how children develop language, and even studying aspects of how the English language developed and evolved into the language we speak today. The course is extremely versatile as it includes both linguistic and analytic elements, tying into scientific, linguistic and humanitarian aspects, and really helps you build confidence in your writing.

I think English language is such a rewarding subject to study, as you can clearly track your progression in developing your analytical and evaluative skills across other subjects and even in every day life. English Language has helped me in ways I wouldn’t have expected - not only has it helped me with my writing and analysis skills in my other subjects, but the linguistic aspects ended up helping me with university interviews
and into parts of my future study in terms of language learning.
