I chose to study biology because I love how it links so closely with everything we do. Whether that’s medicine, healthcare, sports science, the environment, or our history, biology plays an integral role in understanding our world.
Initially, I was worried about the step up from GCSE level, and whilst it is a big step, it is manageable with the support that the teachers and the college provide. There are lunchtime sessions, lots of online resources, you can even just drop into the biology office if you need help with anything. I also enjoyed the weekly Biology Olympiad sessions, as well as lunchtime sessions focusing on difficult exam questions.
My favourite part of the course is genetics, which covers multiple topics. Learning about how genes are expressed and can be affected by the environment is fascinating, and something I look forward to learning more about at university. I also did an EPQ linking to genetics, and it was fun to do some research of my own.
I have found that Biology links heavily with my other subjects, chemistry and maths. Having the skills from A level maths makes the calculations in biology more accessible, and some content from the first topic (biological molecules) appears in chemistry too. There are also plenty of practicals to enjoy. We get the lab coats out quite often!
Whilst I’m not entirely sure on my career path, my next step is to study either biological or biomedical sciences at university. I imagine this could lead me down a path of healthcare or research, or even both.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Godalming, and if you are not sure whether to take biology, go for it! It’s an incredibly useful and exciting subject.
