I chose philosophy because I knew that I always had a curiosity for big questions and ideas and the philosophy course allows you to investigate these fundamental questions in greater depth and analyse other people’s ideas. My favourite thing about philosophy is how it challenges your deepest intuitions and assumptions and forces you to not just see the world in a different way but live differently too. The teachers are really great at making the content accessible and engaging, allowing you to think for yourself and bring your ideas to the classroom.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed my time at Godalming. Two things I’m really grateful for are the opportunities that Godalming has provided me and the skills I’ve gained which have prepared me for uni. In particular, the Aspire programme gave me more confidence and independence in my learning.
I helped found the philosophy society with friends because we wanted to create a space where anyone could come and share their own ideas in philosophy and explore other ideas outside the Philosophy specification by having student debates and lectures. My favourite part about the club has been hearing other people’s abstract ideas. Running the club has improved my leadership skills and allowed me to make new friends with people I might not have met.
