How will I be assessed?
Exam Assessment length
Paper 1: Data and Probability 2 hours
Paper 2: Statistical Inference 2 hours
Paper 3: Statistics in Practice 2 hours
The above exams take place at the end of the second year.
What extra work can I do?
Students are encouraged to:
- Engage with real-world data (e.g. from news, sport or scientific studies)
- Practise interpreting graphs, diagrams and statistical reports
- Attend subject enrichment sessions or workshops
- Develop familiarity with technology such as statistical software or spreadsheets
Independent reading around data, research methods and applied statistics is also beneficial.
What skills will I learn?
You will develop a wide range of transferable skills, including:
- Analytical and critical thinking
- Interpreting and evaluating data
- Problem solving in unfamiliar contexts
- Communicating complex ideas clearly
- Reasoning under uncertainty
- Drawing and justifying conclusions from evidence
These are highly valuable skills for both university study and employment.
What is the department like?
Statistics is delivered by the Mathematics Department, who are experienced in delivering a range of courses, including A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Core Maths. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and are committed to supporting students to achieve their potential.
Lessons are supportive and challenging, with an emphasis on understanding, discussion and applying knowledge to real-world situations. Students are encouraged to develop independence and confidence in their thinking.
Please be aware that the department requires that students buy the Casio CG100 graphical calculator. This is available to purchase for £75 from the College (normally the calculator retails at £140).
